Fulfillment sync options
The setting is a dropdown with three options. You can choose one at a time.
Option | What it does | Choose this if |
Push fulfillments from Sutton to Shopify | When you complete a shipment in Sutton, Sutton marks the matching Shopify order as fulfilled. | Your team picks, packs, and ships orders in Sutton. |
Pull fulfillments from Shopify into Sutton | When an order is fulfilled in Shopify, Sutton adds that fulfillment to the matching sales order as a shipment. | You fulfill orders in Shopify, or a 3PL or shipping app fulfills them through Shopify. |
Don’t sync fulfillments | Sutton and Shopify don't share fulfillments in either direction. | You track fulfillment separately in each system. |
ℹ️ Note: This setting used to be an on/off toggle. If fulfillment sync was turned on for your store, it is now set to Push fulfillments from Sutton to Shopify, which works the same as before. You don’t need to change anything unless you want to pull fulfillments from Shopify instead.
Change your fulfillment sync setting
To choose how fulfillments sync, update your Shopify integration settings:
In Sutton, go to Settings in the left sidebar.
From Settings, go to the Integrations tab.
Open your Shopify integration settings.
In the Push updates section, find Sync order fulfillments with Shopify.
Open the dropdown and select the option that fits how you fulfill orders.
If you select Pull fulfillments from Shopify into Sutton, review the popup that explains how inventory is handled, then click Pull fulfillments.
In the Locations section, make sure Sync fulfillments is turned on for each location you want to include.
Click Save.
💡 Pro Tip: The Locations table links each Sutton location to a Shopify location. Fulfillments only sync for locations where Sync fulfillments is turned on, so check this table if an order isn’t updating as expected
How inventory is handled when you pull fulfillments
When you choose Pull fulfillments from Shopify into Sutton, each fulfillment created in Shopify is recorded as a shipment on the matching sales order in Sutton. Sutton picks the stock from the Sutton location mapped to that Shopify location, then ships it.
If that location doesn’t have enough stock, Sutton adds a stock adjustment with the reason Fulfillment sync to cover the shortfall. This lets the shipment complete without blocking the order.
✅ Best practice: Keep stock levels accurate at your mapped locations. A stock adjustment with the reason Fulfillment sync means Sutton shipped more than it had on hand, so it’s a good signal to review your counts for that item.
