Can I change the number my next SO starts from?
Yes. Our support team can set the number your next sales order uses. From there, new SOs count up from that number.
This is most helpful when you move to Sutton from another system. Starting at a higher number keeps your new SOs from overlapping with SO numbers you've already used. For example, if your old system went up to SO 20032, you can have your next Sutton SO start at 20033.
How do I request the change?
Contact your Customer Success Manager or email [email protected]. Let us know the number you want your next SO to use, and we’ll update it for your organization.
✅ Best practice: Pick a number that’s clearly above the highest SO number from your previous system. A round number, like 20000 or 50000, also makes it easy to tell new Sutton orders apart from older ones.
What happens to my existing SOs?
Your existing SOs keep their current numbers. Only new SOs created after the change use the new starting number.
Does this change my invoice numbers too?
By default, an invoice number matches the SO number it was created from. So once your new SOs start at the new number, the invoices you create from them will follow the same numbering. To learn more, see Why Does My Invoice Number Have a Suffix?.
Will my SO numbers always be in order with no gaps?
SO numbers always count up, but they aren’t guaranteed to be gap-free. Sometimes a number is set aside while an order is being created and never ends up used. This is more likely when several orders are created at the same time, for example through an integration.
This is true both before and after we change your starting number.
Does a gap in my SO numbers mean an order was deleted?
Not necessarily. A gap usually means a number was skipped, not that an SO was lost or removed. All of your SOs are still in Sutton.
📘 Sutton Tip: If your accounting or audit process requires gap-free numbering, talk to your Customer Success Manager before you change your starting number. We can help you plan around it.
